The wonder of the world without the crowds, a colonial town and a swim in a cenote, guided in English. Departure ≈ 6.00am, return ≈ 6.00pm, group of 6 to 14 people, your own guide, €120 per adult all inclusive.
The place
Chichén Itzá, a wonder you earn by getting up early
A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1988 and one of the seven new wonders of the world, Chichén Itzá was one of the most powerful Maya cities. Its pyramid of Kukulcán is a calendar in stone: 365 steps, and at the equinoxes the shadow of a serpent sliding down the staircase. On the way back, Valladolid unfolds its pastel facades and the San Servacio cathedral, one of the prettiest colonial towns in the Yucatán.
The programme
How the day unfolds.
- ≈ 6amDeparture from your hotel
We leave early to arrive ahead of the crowds and ahead of the heat. Allow 2 hours 45 minutes of driving from Playa del Carmen.
- MorningGuided tour of Chichén Itzá
About an hour and a half with your certified French-speaking guide: the Kukulcán pyramid and the Maya calendar it represents, the ball court, the temple of a thousand columns, the observatory, and the oldest part of the site, which predates the pyramid. The site is vast: we cover the most striking structures.
- MorningFree time on the site
Some time of your own, especially for handicrafts, which are far cheaper here than on the Riviera Maya.
- MiddayLunch at a hacienda
Thirty minutes away, in an authentic restored hacienda in Valladolid: a buffet of typical Yucatán dishes you will not find at your hotel. Lunch is included.
- MiddayA swim in the hacienda cenote
A large open cenote, very deep, within the grounds of the hacienda. No mask and snorkel needed.
- AfternoonValladolid, a colonial town
A guided tour of the 16th century historic center: colorful houses, traditions, scents. This is where the great Maya revolt against the Spanish colonizers began. Allow roughly 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes, free time included.
- ≈ 6pmReturn
A long day, but one of the essentials of the peninsula.
