The place

Tulum & Cobá, two faces of the Maya world

Tulum is the only major Maya city built facing the sea: a former trading port perched on its cliff above unreally turquoise water. Cobá, buried in the jungle, hides Nohoch Mul, one of the tallest pyramids on the peninsula. Between the two, Akumal, “the place of turtles” in Maya, is perfectly named.

The programme

How the day unfolds.

  • ≈ 7.30amDeparture from your hotel

We start early and head for Akumal, so we are first on the beach while it is still quiet.

  • MorningSwimming with turtles at Akumal

A boat out to the reef area, about 300 m from the beach, then snorkeling with a guide among the wild turtles that come to graze on the seagrass in the bay. About 45 minutes. Swimming with the turtles is optional, 400 pesos payable on site.

  • MorningA swim in a cenote

We drive on to Cobá through three Maya villages, then swim in a large underground cenote with crystal-clear fresh water.

  • MiddayLunch with a Maya family

A typical meal in a tiny family restaurant we have been going to for more than twelve years: excellent grilled chicken, prepared the local way. Lunch is included.

  • AfternoonCobá by bike

A guided ride of about an hour and a half by bike through the acropolis of this city lost in the jungle. The ground is flat and the outing suits everyone, children included. Rickshaws are available for a very small supplement for anyone who cannot or would rather not cycle.

  • AfternoonThe site of Tulum

A guided tour of about an hour at one of the finest viewpoints in the region, the second most visited site in Mexico. Photography lovers will be well served.

  • ≈ 5.30pmReturn

The order of the activities is adapted to the time of year and can therefore vary with the season and the crowds. We always arrange to visit the sites in the best possible conditions for you.
