Hanal Pixán, the Maya version of the day of the dead
In the Yucatán, the Día de Muertos is called Hanal Pixán, “the food of the souls”. Listed as UNESCO intangible heritage, this celebration is anything but sad: people cook for their dead, cover the graves with flowers and light candles to guide the souls. In the villages, far from the parades put on for tourists, it is one of the most moving things you can experience in Mexico.

A moment to talk with the family and your guide, about dia de muertos and about everyday life in the Maya villages. If you like, you can bring clothes, school supplies or cakes for the children: it always makes them happy.
