The X’Canché cenote: a natural wonder at Ek’ Balam
Just a few steps from the Ek’ Balam archaeological site, the X’Canché cenote is a true natural gem, one of the most fascinating in the Yucatán region. It is an open-air natural well ringed by vines that drop down to crystal-clear water, tucked into an idyllic setting, perfect for unwinding.
Stepping into the heart of the X’Canché cenote
This natural setting sits deep in the jungle. Its geological formation, typical of the cenotes of Yucatán, is striking for its steep walls covered in vegetation and its hanging vines. Thanks to its remarkable biodiversity, the site is the natural habitat of countless birds and other local species. To take in the full majesty of the place, walk down the wooden stairs that lead to the bottom of the cenote.
Where is the X’Canché cenote?
The X’Canché cenote sits just three kilometres from the Ek’ Balam ruins. Being so close to the site makes it an ideal stop to combine cultural discovery and relaxation out in nature.
How do you get to the X’Canché cenote?
You have several options.
By car
Allow about thirty minutes from Valladolid, taking the road towards Río Lagartos and Tizimín. A car park awaits you at Ek’ Balam. You then have to cover around two kilometres on foot or by bike, included in your entrance fee.
By scooter
A scooter lets you explore the region entirely on your own terms. Several local agencies rent them out for around 500 pesos a day.
By colectivo
These local minibuses run straight to Ek’ Balam. It is the cheapest option. Once there, around two kilometres remain to cover by bike or on foot.
By taxi
A taxi is quick but pricier: allow around 280 pesos for a one-way trip from Valladolid.
On an organised tour
Some local agencies, such as Paseo Tours, offer guided visits with transport included.

When should you visit the X’Canché cenote?
The cenote is open all year round, but it is best to go between December and March, during the dry season, to enjoy clear water under a sunny sky. Because it stays relatively off the radar, the experience is peaceful even in the middle of the day.
What can you do on site?
- Swimming: the cool, clear water is perfect after a morning of cultural sightseeing.
- Zipline and rappel: the adjoining eco-park offers adventure courses for no more than 170 pesos.
- Nature watching: a quiet walk through the surrounding jungle, rich in wildlife and plant life.
- Relaxing: areas with hammocks are set up for resting.
Our practical tips
On site, you have access to changing rooms to get changed and keep your belongings safe.
Cenotes are fragile ecosystems: take a shower before swimming to avoid any pollution from sunscreen. It is also forbidden to touch the vines and the rock formations, so that the site stays intact.
A few ideas to round off the visit
For a full day, combine the X’Canché cenote with a visit to the Ek’ Balam archaeological site in the morning. In the afternoon, explore the colonial town of Valladolid, right nearby: its colourful streets, its traditional restaurants and its distinctive architecture.
