How to get to Sian Ka'an
Dirt track, several entrances, scattered boat landings: getting to Sian Ka’an is not something you improvise. Here are the possible routes.
Sian Ka’an is a fascinating nature reserve, but getting there can be a challenge. This guide will help you understand how to reach and visit this exceptional place.
Getting into the Sian Ka’an reserve
Access roads
To reach Sian Ka’an, you have to take a sand track. This road can be in poor condition, especially during the rainy season. On one side you have the mangrove, and on the other the sea. It adds to the charm of the reserve, making access harder but memorable.
Boarding points for the boat
There are several points where you can board:
- The visitor centre for a VIP tour.
- Paséo Lagartos which will cut more than an hour off the track.
- Punta Allen the village right at the end of the sandbank.
Tips for getting there
If you are travelling under your own steam, head for Punta Allen. Leave your vehicle there and use one of the boat cooperatives. Prices are similar across the three cooperatives available.

Precautions to take
Recommended vehicle
A 4×4 vehicle is often necessary to drive the track. The roads can be particularly rough, so be ready. On top of that, there is no mobile coverage in the reserve. Make sure you are well prepared before setting off.
Transport options
If you choose to go through an agency, you will set off from Tulum in a van. You can then take the boat at Paséo Lagartos or Punta Allen. Check the details in advance to avoid surprises.
A lesser known option
It is also possible to take the boat directly at the visitor centre. However, this option is more expensive and can limit the places you visit. The boat cooperatives often choose the route themselves.

Conclusion
Visiting Sian Ka’an is an unforgettable adventure. Planning your trip properly is essential to make the most of this unique reserve. Whether you choose to go by car or with an agency, get ready to explore the beauty of Sian Ka’an.
