The place

Diving into the Maya underworld

Cenotes are the entrances to gigantic underground rivers and, for the Maya, the gateways to the underworld: offerings are still found in some of them. Below the surface: haloclines, stalactites and shafts of light crossing the clearest water a diver will ever meet. There is nowhere else in the world to experience this the same way.

The programme

How the day unfolds.

  • ≈ 8amMeeting at the dive centre

We set off from our partner dive centre in Playa del Carmen, then drive into the forest to one of the region’s many freshwater sinkholes.

  • On siteA specific briefing

Cenote diving has its own rules: guideline, lights, a specially trained guide. The water stays at 24 to 25 degrees all year and is remarkably clear.

  • DiveInto the underground river

Shafts of light, stalactites and stalagmites, and on some sites the halocline, the hazy layer where fresh water meets salt water, paired with a thermocline.

  • In betweenSnack

A drink and a snack before the second dive.

  • DiveSecond dive

Two 45-minute dives in all. We provide a 5 mm wetsuit, mask, regulator, BCD and torch.

  • ≈ 2pmReturn

Back to the partner centre. For the Maya, cenotes were the entrance to the underworld: once you are underwater, you understand why.
