Muyil & Sian Ka'an: the tour through the canals
Two gateways into the same reserve, two very different experiences. Here is how to choose between Muyil and the Sian Ka’an biosphere.
During your stay in Mexico, visiting the Sian Ka’an reserve or the Muyil site is a must. These two destinations are nonetheless very different. This guide helps you choose the one that matches what you are looking for.
Sian Ka’an: a one of a kind nature reserve
Sian Ka’an is a nature reserve of 528,000 hectares, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is home to remarkable biodiversity: tropical forests, mangroves and marine ecosystems. It is one of the largest protected areas in Mexico.
The highlights of a Sian Ka’an excursion
- Access: by boat, via the Tulum-Boca Paila track.
- Activities: watching dolphins, turtles and migratory birds, swimming in a natural pool.
- Duration: a full day.
- Water: salt water.

Muyil: an archaeological site in the heart of nature
The Muyil site, located inside the reserve, offers a combination of history and nature, with far easier access.
The strong points of a visit to Muyil
- Access: easy, via the main road (carretera federal).
- Activities: exploring the archaeological site, a boat ride through the lagoons and drifting down the canals.
- Duration: half a day.
- Water: fresh water.

The differences to know about
Both excursions offer unique experiences, but they are very different. If you want to immerse yourself in wild nature with strong chances of spotting marine animals, Sian Ka’an will be your best option. If you prefer a quieter outing that combines history and nature, Muyil will suit you better.
Two complementary experiences
It is important to note that you will not be able to visit Muyil and Sian Ka’an on the same day: the two sites are not in the same place and the local organisations run the two activities separately.
