The place
Isla Contoy, a sanctuary since 1961
Protected for more than sixty years, Contoy is the wildest island in the Mexican Caribbean: a quota of 200 visitors a day, no hotels, and more than 150 bird species, frigatebirds, brown pelicans and cormorants, which rule over its lagoons. Where the Gulf of Mexico meets the Caribbean Sea, its Ixlaché reef marks the start of the great Mesoamerican barrier.
